French manicure: origin, trendy ideas 2026 and step by step tuto

7 min to read

Chic, minimalist, still in the game: the French manicure didn't say its last word. The French were a star of the 1970s and had a great revival. Modernized, revisited, Twist, it is infinitely available. We'll tell you the secrets of this great art nail classic and our tips for success at home, like pro!

The French manicure: what is it?

An invention made in USA, a "so french" style

Contrary to what one might think, The French manicure is not from Paris but from... Los Angeles! It was created in the 1970s by Jeff Pink, founder of the Orly brand, to meet the needs of Hollywood studios: to ensure that actresses did not have to change nail polish every time they changed their outfit. The result: hands with a neutral, refined style... and perfectly photogenic on red carpet. Baptised reference to the legendary chic that is attributed to French women. It is this discreet and versatile elegance that will make the global success of French.

A technique, infinite variations

The recipe of French: a base nude, white or slightly dew, topped by an ultra-fine white border. To sublimate the nails with a clean, neat and discreet effect... As a bonus, the French manicure flatters all the forms of nails: short, long, rounded, square or almond, lend itself as well to the great occasions (couch the brides!) as to everyday. With classic varnish Green™ or semi-permanent varnish Green Flash™It is always a sure value.

Today, the French Manucure signs a return very noticed in the trends nail art. Revisited in reverse (or "French Reversal"), shaded, glazed, glazed or ultra-colored, it modernises without ever losing its chic DNA.

Variants of the French manicure

The classic French

The realization of this timeless nail art therefore begins with a base nude or translucent. For this, you have the choice between a semi-transparent nail polish as Milky White, Hortencia or Pale Rose. Our varnish care Active™ are also excellent bases of French: the Active GlowTM for a slightly tinted gloss effect or Active™ Smooth to smooth out imperfections and ensure impeccable rendering.

For the white line on the free edge of the nail, an opaque white varnish like Snow or Cream is all right.

💡 Tip Find all the essentials to succeed your classic French manicure thanks to the Kit French Active.

The French Inverted

Want to change your point of view on French? Instead of highlighting the free edge of the nail, mark your French smile in the opposite with a fine brush, base side of løongle. On short nails, the French inverted lengthens visually l ́ongle. On long nails or almonds, it enhances the fineness of the hands. Anyway, we love it!

On a nude basis, test the French inverted version pastel with a light blue varnish Bubble or chromed with a glittery brown varnish such as Bronze. It also allows to play with the colour associations. For example, dare the combo Candy based on Ultramarine or Khaki base, decorated with a golden bronze border Shimmer.

The French Colorful

The French manicure is not limited to nude & white, it can also reinvent itself in a colorful version. Fresh pastel tints, bright colours or sun shades, here are our favourite associations:

French lemon pepper with Lime, a refreshing green yellow placed in a free edge of løngle on a nude base (type Hortencia). Wonderful on short or rounded nails for a discreet pop effect!

French chic and solar with the Hortencia duo for the rosy nude effect that flatters all carnations and Riviera, a vibrating blue azure varnish, bordered and in very fine line. A contrast that makes wonders on tanned or slightly tanned skin. To be adopted in summer!

The fruity French with Active GlowTM Cranberrya translucent care varnish with orange pink reflections in one or two layers according to the desired intensity, to be married with Coral Reef, a vibrant coral for a fruity and energizing effect. A cannon combo on medium to dark skin.

💡 Tip : With the Colored French Kit, create your custom French manicure by selecting the database Active Smooth adapted to your skin tone as well as the color that will border your pretty nails.

La French Twistée : gazed, dots, double french & Co

The French is a real stylistic experiment, with an effect of ice, split lines, geometrical or camaly pattern. Here are our favorite inspirations to adopt the French next generation.

English Glazed : in 2026, the Glazed trend Breathe a frosty air on the French manicure, giving it even more charm and style. On a classic French, the powder White Glazed Leaves a slightly pearly white veil, ideal for a wedding manicure.

English & Dots When French takes the tangent and gets dressed with peas, we rediscover it from a new angle. On a Pale Rose base, dress the tip of your nails with 4 different colors (here Sage, Tuileries, Poppy Red, Snow), in the same way as a French XXL which extends on the side. Add little polka dots Snow and Licorice using a dotting tool. Ultra stylish result guaranteed!

Double mini French vibrating : an unexpected duo with ultra graphic rendering: on a Hortencia basis, combine a first line of French pearly with Groove, enhanced by a line of Queen of Night delicately laid with the help of Mani Stamper. The result is a two-tone border with both sophisticated and festive rendering.

How do I do a French manicure at home? Step by step

Making a French manicure worthy of a living room, without moving from the couch, is possible provided you have the right gestures... and the right products. Preparation of nails, fine and precise application of white or coloured border, glossy finish: each step counts for a clear and long lasting result. We're guiding you step by step to succeed your French at home, without stress or failure.

Prepare your nails

The sine qua non condition for a successful French manicure: impeccable nails. Preparation is therefore an essential step that includes 4 essential actions:

  • Start with Line your nails with a Soft nail file giving them the desired shape: square, rounded, oval, almond...
  • Then soften your cuticles thanks to l-Efficacy before gently pushing them off with a cuticle shoot.
  • Then, matify the surface with a preparation file to smooth and ensure the proper holding of your varnish.
  • Finally, degrease your nails to remove dust and grease residues.

Put the protective base down

Before applying the basic color of your French manicure, remember to place a protective base coat.

If you have opted for a varnish Green™ , you can apply the Base Vitamin Coat Green™, a new version of the Coat Base Green™ now equipped with KeraHCE+ technology that strengthens nail under color. If you prefer the Green Flash™ varnish, you will apply the Vitaminated Coat Base Green Flash™.

Allow to dry well in the open air for the Base Coat Vitamine Green™ , LED lamp for the Base Coat vitamin Green Flash™ .

Apply the base color

As with your usual varnishing, apply the base color you have chosen in one or two layers according to the desired rendering. Dry each layer in open air or LED lamp according to the type of varnish chosen.

💡 Tips : apply the varnish in thin layer. To do this, wipe the brush on the edge of the bottle to keep just what it takes to cover the nail in a uniform way.

Trace the smile of the French

If you are a nail art addict, you will have no difficulty in tracing your French smile with the help of a Liner brush, the ideal tool for mini French in particular.

If you're new to the art of French manicure, you'll love our Mani Stamper. Thanks to it, you can apply the white (or coloured) line without shaking and achieve your French manicure in just seconds.

How does it work? Place a line of varnish on the silicone pad of Mani Stamper. Apply gently on the edge of the nail: the silicone pad fits perfectly to the shape and curvature of the nail. However, make sure not to place the nail vertically on the Mani Stamper but in a bias as the buffer is fragile.

Let dry and correct any spillage on the skin with a patch pen or cotton swab soaked in soft solvent. For perfectionists: refine the curve with a fine brush.

Set with a top coat

Finish with a layer of top coat to fix and protect your nail art and bring it shine. On varnish Green™ , apply a thin layer of Top Coat Sunshine. On Green Flash™ varnish, you have the choice between a layer of Top Coat Green Flash™ (held up to 12 days) or Xtrem Flash™ (held up to 21 days). Dry in open air or under LED lamp depending on the type of varnish chosen.

And to conclude this French manicure in beauty, moisturize your nails and cuticles with a drop of green oil applied in massage on the nails and their contour.

Classic or Twisted, minimalist or chromed, the French manicure continues to demonstrate its amazing ability to adapt to all nail shapes and styles. She is a true chameleon of the nail art, which has lost nothing of her charm, even offering a small cure of modernity. Whether you are a team of nude varnishes or assumed pop color, you only have to choose your favorite shades, draw your Mani Stamper and let your creativity be expressed. Sometimes just pull a line to make all the difference
